These are Gigabit Ethernet managed industrial grade L2+ switches with 8 or 16x 10/100/1000Base-T ports and 4 or 8x GbE/Fast SFP ports that provide reliable transmission. They also support timing synchronization features (SyncE & IEEE1588 PTP v2) that allow operators to deliver services with optimal stability and continuity in end to end connectivity. Housed in rugged DIN rail or wall mountable enclosures, these switches are designed for harsh environments, such as industrial networks, security automation applications, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and are also suitable for many military and utility market applications where environmental conditions exceed commercial product specifications (See Figure). Standard operating temperature range models (-10 to 60°C) and wide operating temperature range models (-40 to 75°C) fulfill the special needs of industrial automation applications.

1588  Precision Time Protocol

These switches  support IEEE 1588 PTP V2 for precise time synchronization.  Each port may be configured independently  to operate in Ordinary-Boundary,  Peer to Peer Transparent Clock,  End to End Transparent Clock, Master, or Slave mode.  Accuracy is measured in nanoseconds, making it suitable for time sensitive applications such as mobile phone networks, military systems and large scale financial networks.

Synchronous Ethernet

The 1608SM-SE switches offer full ITU-T G.8262 SyncE functionality which provides for the use of a single network master clock.  SyncE is widely used in cellular networks, fibre PON (Passive Optical Network) systems, VoIP and IPTV.


The units are equipped with both RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication for use in sensitive networks where security is paramount. SSL & SSH2 are also supported.


IPv6 or Internet Protocol version 6 is the IETF's latest version of the network layer protocol responsible for uniquely identifying hosts and devices and facilitating the delivery of datagrams over a packet switched network. IPv6, as the successor to IPv4, came about to overcome the exhaustion of the number of unique addresses that IPv4 could provide. IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses 4 times that of IPv4 and theoretically offering 3.4x10^38 unique addresses.

IEEE802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet

Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) enables the IGS1608-SE to reduce its power consumption during periods of low network activity. Typically an Ethernet interface sends a stream of idle code to maintain synchronisation with their counterpart. When IGS1608-SE uses EEE power savings can be made once network activity falls below 20% on any given link. It is possible to make significant power savings outside of 'normal' working hours when the network is perhaps mostly inactive.
